Sharks are a popular teaching specimen for biology and anatomy courses, specifically used for the teaching of cartilaginous fish anatomy. They are also great animal models to study comparative and vertebrate anatomy.
Sharks can be Spiny Dogfish Shark (Squalus acanthias), Smooth Dogfish (Mustelus canis), or Pacific Sharpnose Shark (Rhizoprionodon longurio).
The harvesting of sharks is regulated by National Marine Fisheries to protect the species. Quantities used by our industry are very small in relation to the overall harvest.
