Observe the “Energy Producers” in Cells

Observe mitochondria both as cytoplasmic organelles and as centers of enzyme activity. Students will prepare microscope slides using celery and a special stain that acts as a hydrogen acceptor; as the dye loses color, students can actually watch the mitochondria under the microscope as they oxidize food. The kit includes two prepared reference slides of plant and animal mitochondria, enough materials for six setups, a teacher’s guide, and student copymaster.
