The coiled-metal wire of the spring helps students understand the energy that is transmitted in a wave.

Teachers can use the helix as a transverse wave demonstration by having one student vibrate one end up and down, or they can demonstrate longitudinal waves by stretching it out and pinching the coils together and then releasing them.
