The kit uses a combination of teacher-directed lessons and student activities to help students understand the motions of the Moon and how to interpret them. Primarily, students will employ framework concepts of Earth's Place in the Universe (ESS1) to learn about the phases of the Moon, as well as the difference between a lunar (synodic) month and a sidereal month.
Pre and Post-laboratory assessments and vocabulary words all target specific Science and Engineering Practices and common core standards. The teacher's guide contains specific "Did You Know" concepts. A student copy master is also included. Materials are provided for 10 groups.
The kit is also available for purchase with a link to a NewPath digital lesson, which includes a variety of resources on the topic, including background information, illustrations and self-assessments.
Certifications: Aligned with all published National Standards.
Ordering information: This activity contains 10 sun models, 10 earth models, 10 moon models, 10 moon reference markers, 10 zip-lock plastic storage bags, 30 caps, 1 pad of 100 'orbit the moon' sheets, and a teacher's and student's guide. Flashlights, masking tape, pencils are required.
