Differential Model

Description: This product is a model of a differential. This model permits the instructor and student to manually turn the handle and apply a load to the transparent wheels to demonstrate the differential mechanism.
In automotive mechanics, the differential gear arrangement permits power from the engine to be transmitted to a pair of driving wheels, which divides the force equally between them and permits them to follow paths of different lengths, as when turning a corner or crossing an uneven road. On a straight road, the wheels rotate at the same speed. When turning a corner, the outside wheel has farther to go and will turn faster than the inner wheel if unrestrained. Description: Apparatus for measuring the time it takes for a ball to fall a certain distance using a digital timer. Very easy to set up and use but nevertheless highly accurate. Includes 3 steel balls. A micro-magnet holds the ball in its start position. Three contact pins under the release mechanism ensure that the start position of the ball can be reproduced and act as the contacts of a switch that opens when the ball is released, thus triggering the beginning of the timing measurement. When the ball strikes the contact plate at the bottom, the timer is stopped. The ball is also held firmly on the plate so that it does not bounce. The height through which the ball drops can be adjusted to a fraction of a millimeter and read off a scale on the column.

Description: Mounted on molded plastic base, the unit consists of a base into the top of which may be screwed one of a set of four vases of differing shapes. An aperture in the bottom has a thin rubber diaphragm across it, bearing upon the short arm of the lever pointer. A moveable index on the vertical rod enables the height of water in vases to be set at same level. The apparatus is mounted on moulded plastic base that measures 25 x 17.5cm. The experiment is performed by screwing in each vase, in turn, and filling with water to the same level. It will be seen that the given height of water will result in the same deflection of pointer whatever shape of the vase.
