Students employ a procedure used for a variety of biotechnology research applications to extract DNA. Using genomic DNA extracted from their own cheek cells, they precipitate and bottle the DNA in a necklace. They see the normally invisible substance of life and begin to comprehend the meaning of their own genetic makeup.

Students can complete the lab in one 45-minute session. The kit includes material for 36 necklaces.

Ordering information: This kit includes the DNA Extraction Module, 125 mL of lysis buffer, 1.5 g of powdered protease, 15 mL conical tubes, multicolor microcentrifuge tubes, disposable plastic transfer pipets, a teacher's guide, a student manual, a graphic quick guide, 36 DNA necklaces with clear plastic vials, screw-on caps, plastic plugs, and waxed string. 91% isopropyl alcohol or 95% ethanol are required but not provided.
