Copper oxide is reduced with hydrogen to form elementary copper. Hydrogen is a good reducing agent. Its ability to react applies not only to free oxygen but also to oxygen compounds. The metal is formed in this way when transforming a metal oxide (as in this experiment) with hydrogen.
