Sherlock Bones: Identification of Skeletal Remains Kit

This lab provides students with experience with the process of epiphyseal union as well as using Vernier calipers. Students will be given a few bones, and then take the role of a forensic anthropologist to determine as much information as possible about the bones to help identify the individual. Students will become familiar with some of the techniques performed by a forensic anthropologist as well as some of the challenges one may encounter along the way. Framework Science Standards (LS2), (LS3), and (LS4) are all utilized in this lab activity (Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics, Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits, Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity).

This kit has been aligned with all published National Standards. Pre- and Post-laboratory assessments and vocabulary words all target specific Science and Engineering Practices and common core standards. The teacher guide also contains specific "Did You Know" concepts that link the real world with scientific standards explored. A student copymaster is also included. The lab activity booklet can be used with this kit and our additional bone sets, as well as bone sets that you may already have in your classroom. This kit includes enough materials to be used repeatedly.

Ordering information: Kit contents include Plastic skull, Plastic humerus, Plastic pelvis, Plastic femur, Large caliper, Protractors, Vernier calipers, Metric rulers, Teacher's Guide, and Student Guide. The bones included with this kit were cast from a 25 year old Caucasian male who stood between 5'0" and 5'9" tall. This activity takes approximately 45–60 minutes to complete.

I have used this lab for about 10 years. Over the years I've done a few modifications for my students like others have suggested (breaking it down into smaller chunks, labeling the diagrams, etc.) As you have kids work through it, you find the areas where confusion hits and you can modify the way you present for future years. It's very interesting and the kids really like it, though it is challenging. They are expected to read and follow directions (a novel idea!!) and work together to solve a problem. I tell them at the beginning to work together and "ask three before me" to see if they can help each other out before asking me to clarify, otherwise I'm constantly being asked. Make sure you show them WHERE to find the information they need to complete the measurement so they know how to work independently. My first year using it was a bit chaotic, but over the years I've found a way to minimize the confusion. Embrace the struggle!!

This kit compliments the chapter I teach on forensic anthropology very well. My only recommendation would be that you don't give out the entire student packet to the students; it becomes difficult to understand. I broke it up in to numerous parts and when I copied them, each packet had a different color cover page. I would also have the students label the anatomical photos before starting the lab. This will help them as they progress through the investigation.

complicated lab - I like the idea of this lab but it was a bit confusing. The calipers were like none I had used before and didn't have directions on how to use them. It was a lot of guessing then checking the answer key.

Also, I bought two different types of skeletons so several lab groups could work at a time. I did not realize the many differences between the lab packet for each skeleton and I ran off the same
