Q: What is 3D printing and how does it work?A: 3D printing is the process of designing and building a three dimensional object using a computer aided design (CAD) program, 3D printer, and building materirals of your choice, known as filament. Much like a 2D printer, the digital design file is sent to the printer, which then lays down thin layers of filament one by one, building vertically until the object is complete. Q: How do 3D printers help students and teachers in the science classroom?A: 3D printers allow students to apply science, engineering, and math concepts to create real-life object that they can hold in their hands. When they can see the tangible results of their ideas and hard work, it's extremely motivating and they become more engaged and invested in their learning. Because 3D printing produces a physical model of conceptual design, students are able to visualize and test the accuracy of their design, and then modify and re-print until it's just right. This is the true process of innovation, building key problem solving and creativity skills that translate to real-world careers and entrepreneurship. Q: Where else can teachers go if they need help selecting a 3D printer or have more questions?A: Give me a call or send me an email! If you're not sure which model is right for you, I can personally walk you through the process and help you choose the right 3D printer for your project and classroom needs. Just give me a shout out at [email protected] or 866-260-0501. Need help funding you school's 3D printer purchase? Talk to our Ward's Science Grants Consultant.
