Gangliosides are acidic glycosphingolipids that form lipid rafts in the outer leaflet of the cell plasma membrane, especially in neuronal cells in the central nervous system. They participate in cellular proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, signal transduction, cell-to-cell interactions, tumorigenesis and metastasis. The accumulation of gangliosides has been linked to several diseases. Ganglioside GM1 is a major sialoglycolipid of neuronal membranes that modulates calcium homeostasis and which is important for neuronal plasticity and repair mechanisms. It binds to cholera toxin B subunit, resulting in stimulation of adenylyl cyclase in a wide variety of cell types. After cholera toxin binds to membrane associated Monosialoganglioside GM1, the A subunit of cholera toxin is translocated to the cell interior, where it catalyzes the ADP ribosylation of the membrane associated Gs subunit of adenylyl cyclase. In addition, binding of cholera toxin to monosialoganglioside GM1 causes translocation of NF-kappaB and activation of dendritic cells. E. coli heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) is structurally and functionally similar to cholera toxin and binds GM1 as well. GM1 has also been shown to improve Parkinson's disease symptoms and slow it's progression.

NADPH-diaphorase substrate that competitively inhibits NOS (nitric oxide synthase). Well-known scavenger of superoxide anions. Dye that is used for detection of alkaline phosphatase in combination with 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indoxyl phosphate (BCIP). This substrate system produces an insoluble NBT diformazan end product that is blue in color and can be observed visually. When used with BCIP, it is suitable for detection of alkaline phosphatase in western blots, for immunohistological staining procedures and for colorimetric indication of bacterial infection in blood samples. Used as a redox indicator for enzymatic reactions including dehydrogenases, threonine deaminase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, phosphofructokinase on polyacrylamide gels, oxidases on polyacrylamide gels and pentose shunt dehydrogenses. The NBT/BCIP reaction is also used for colorimetric/spectrophotometric activity assays of oxidoreductases. One application is in activity stains in gel electrophoresis, such as with the mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes.

Methotrexate is a cell cycle arresting agent with varying effects. Methotrexate has been reported to arrest the cell cycle in late G1/S thus leading to the inhibition of the synthesis of DNA, RNA, thymidylates, and proteins. The main mechanism of action is reported to involve the inhibition of enzymes involved in purine metabolism which leads to the accumulation of adenosine or the suppression of intercellular adhesion molecule expression by T cells. Additionally, this compound has been observed to inhibit DHFR.
Methotrexate is used for chemotherapy either alone or in combination with other agents. It is effective for the treatment of a number of cancers including: breast, head and neck, leukemia, lymphoma, lung, osteosarcoma, bladder, and trophoblastic neoplasms. Cefotaxime is a cephalosporin, which acts by interference of synthesis of peptidoglycan of the bacterial cell wall. Cefotaxime, a cephalosporin antibiotic, is active against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. In addition, cefotaxime blocks the division of cyanobacteria and lower plant organelles/plastids such as the photosynthetic organelles of Glaucophytes and chloroplasts of bryophytes.
Cefotaxime is used for infections of the respiratory tract, skin, bones, joints, urogenital system, meninges, and bloodstream. It generally has good coverage against most Gram-negative bacteria, with the notable exception of Pseudomonas. It is also effective against most Gram-positive cocci except for Enterococcus. It is active against penicillin-resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae. It has modest activity against the anaerobic Bacteroides fragilis. In meningitis, cefotaxime crosses the blood–brain barrier better than cefuroxime.
Cefotaxim inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls. As a result, bacteria lyse due to cell wall autolytic enzymes.
