Ward's® Live Termite Flagellates (Trychonympha and Pyrsonympha)

Termite flagellates live in the intestine of Zootermopsis termites as symbiotic organisms. They can be easily isolated and observed.

Flagellate protozoa including the genera Trichonympha and Pyrsonympha live in the intestinal tract of dampwood termites (Zootermopsis sp.) There they live, protected from the elements, and provided with food; in return they help the termite break down the cellulose in the wood they eat.

Show your students this relationship by allowing them to observe the termites' feeding behaviors, and then isolate the symbionts.
