Xiphactinus audax is an extinct genus of large predatory marine tarpon-like bony fish that lived during the late Albian to the late Maastrichtian Stage of the Cretaceous period. The genus grew up to 6 m (20') in length, and superficially resembled a gargantuan, fanged tarpon. Xiphactinus spent its juvenile stage of life in shallow seaway margins for protection and to utilize rich food resources of small to medium fish.
