IPTG (isopropylthiogalactoside) is an inducer of the lac operon in bacteria, which is frequently used in cloning as a component of a recombinant plasmid.
When used with X-gal to detect lac gene activity, IPTG can be used for screening of clones containing a gene of interest in the lac operon.
