Osmometers determine the total solute particle concentration in physiological and biological liquids. Using the common freezing point depression method, the osmolality is reached by introducing a serum sample to the cooling chamber to reach a temperature below the expected freezing point. Then the sample is stirred for partial crystallization. The on-board computers in osmometers have the capability to recall a set number of past tests for easy comparisons.
