CCDC22 is a recently identified coiled-coil domain-containing protein that has been shown to bind copines, which are calcium-dependent, membrane-binding proteins that may function in calcium signaling. In rat, CCDC22 has been observed to localize in multiple regions of the brain, including the prefrontal and somatosensory cortex, dentate gyrus and thalamus, and in the ipsilateral motor neurons of the spinal cord after sciatic nerve transection suggesting that it may play a role in neuronal injury response. The human CCDC22 gene has been identified as a novel candidate gene for syndromic X-linked intellectual disability (XLID).

Rabbit Anti-VhH antibody can be used to detect single domain VhH antibodies. The single-domain antibody (sdAb) is a small (12 - 14 kDa) antibody fragment that consists of a monomeric variable domain derived from the heavy chain, also called a VhH antibody. These heavy chain only Fab-like domains have activity that is similar to a whole antibody, and they are able to bind to a specific antigens. SdAb's are derived from camelid species that include llamas, alpacas and camels. Camelids produce both classical (containing heavy and light chain fragments) and non-classical antibody structures (containing only a heavy chain). VhH antibodies are the smallest functional antigen-binding fragment that occurs in nature and these are now being used in biotechnology as a novel antibody scaffold. The small size of the VhH single domain antibody makes it very attractive for use in diagnostic imaging and they have potential for therapeutic activity.

DEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp, are putative RNA helicases implicated in several cellular processes involving modifications of RNA secondary structure. DHX36 (DEAH box protein 36), also known as MLE-like protein 1 and RNA helicase associated with AU-rich element ARE (RHAU), belongs to RNA helicase of the DEAH family and may function in sex development and spermatogenesis. It is expressed in testis and is evolutionary conserved with true orthologs in almost all animal species. DHX36 plays a role in degradation and deadenylation of mRNAs containing in their 3'-UTR the consensus ARE sequence element. DHX36 is required for early embryogenesis.

Adipose tissue of an organism plays a major role in regulating physiologic and pathologic processes such as metabolism and immunity by producing and secreting a variety of bioactive molecules termed adipokines. One highly conserved family of adipokines is adiponectin/ACRP30 and its structural and functional paralogs, the C1q/tumor necrosis factor-alpha-related proteins (CTRPs) 1-7. Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed exclusively by differentiated adipocytes, the CTRPs are expressed in a wide variety of tissues. These proteins are thought to act mainly on liver and muscle tissue to control glucose and lipid metabolism. An analysis of the crystal structure of adiponectin revealed a structural and evolutionary link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins, suggesting that these proteins arose from a common ancestral innate immunity gene. CTRP6 contains at least 4 glycosylation motifs, suggesting that CTRP6 may be highly post-translationally modified.

Fas-associated protein 1 (FAF1) was initially identified as a Fas-binding pro-apoptotic protein that is component of the death-inducing signaling complex in Fas-mediated apoptosis. FAF1 can also induce apoptosis in the absence of extrinsic death signals when overexpressed although it does not contain typical death motifs such as the death domain, death effector domain, and caspase recruitment domain. Overexpression of FAF1 also decreases the basal level of NF-kB activity in transfected 293 cells, inhibits NF-kB activity induced by TNF-a, IL-1b and lipopolysaccharide, and prevents NF-kB translocation to the nucleus, suggesting that another role of FAF1 is to negatively regulate the activity of NF-kB. FAF1 can also interact with the inflammatory signaling PYRIN-containing Apaf-1-like proteins (PYPAFs, also called NALPs) such as PYPAF1, PYPAF2 (NALP2), and PYPAF7, suggesting FAF1 may also be involved in the inflammation pathway. Multiple differentially spliced isoforms of FAF1 are known to exist.

Collapsin-response mediator proteins (CRMPs) are highly expressed in the developing brain where they play major roles in axonal outgrowth, neurite differentiation, and apoptosis. Their continued expression in areas of high synaptic remodeling such as the cerebellum, hippocampus, and the olfactory system suggests that these proteins may also be involved in adult brain plasticity. CRMP-1 was initially identified as a dihydro-pyrimidinase expressed exclusively in brain; later studies have shown that it is involved with neurotrophin (NT) 3-induced neurite formation and outgrowth. CRMP-1 localization switches from axonal to somatodendritic when neurons reach functional maturity, suggesting that it is involved in early neuronal differentiation as well as in later processes related to the survival or death of the newly generated neurons.

CCR8 is one of the chemokine receptors that are required as coreceptors for HIV infection. The genes encoding human and murine CCR8 were cloned and designated TER1, CKR-L1, and ChemR1. The encoded seven transmembrane protein was identified as the receptor for human CC chemokine I-309 and renamed CCR8. Recently, CCR8 was found to serve as a coreceptor for diverse T-cell tropic, dual-tropic and macrophage-tropic HIV-1 strains. CCR8 mediates CC chemokine I-309 induced monocyte chemoattraction and HIV-1 envelope fusion and virus infection, which can be prevented by the CCR8 ligand I-309. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, occurs during normal cellular differentiation and development of multicellular organisms. Apoptosis is induced by certain cytokines including TNF and Fas ligand of the TNF family through their death domain containing receptors, TNFR1 and Fas. A novel cell death receptor was recently identified by several groups independently and designated DR3, Wsl-1, Apo-3, TRAMP and LARD1-5. The ligand for this novel death receptor has been defined as TWEAK, also termed Apo3L. DR3 is highly expressed in the tissues enriched in lymphocytes including PBL, thymus and spleen.
