How clean is my pond?
In this lab activity, students will explore the quality of water from a fresh water site, such as a pond, stream, or lake. Using basic framework concepts of Eart's Systems (ESS2) and Earth and Human Activity (ESS3), students will study the water's appearance, aquatic life, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen levels and will look into how the quality of water is affected by these variables. The students' understanding of these activities will allow them to understand how to determine the quality of a sample of water, as well as learn what changes can be made to improve its quality.
This kit has been aligned with all published National Standards. Pre- and Post-laboratory assessments and vocabulary words all target specific Science and Engineering Practices and common core standards. The teacher guide also contains specific "Did You Know" concepts that link the real world with scientific standards explored. A student copymaster is also included. This activity can be performed repeatedly with the materials provided in this kit.
