Amplification of DNA By PCR Activity |
| Perform Procedure Without a Thermocycler |
Expose students to this fundamental DNA amplifying process without the need for expensive equipment. Ideal for forensics, biology, and biochemstry study, this lab activity developed in partnership with Brookhaven National Laboratories is a simple introduction to the Nobel Prize winning technique of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).
Using a straightforward DNA extraction method for cheek cells, students amplify a section of their mitochondrial genome by PCR. Instead of using an automated thermocycler and time consuming procedures, this lab can be completed in one hour. Once PCR is complete, students can test their results by running amplified DNA on an agarose gel with size markers.
Three water baths, an eletrophoresis chamber, and power supply are required, but not included.
