Cryoscopy: Freezing Point of Solutions |
| Cryoscopic Experiment Without Using Hazardous Chemicals |
With safety as a priority, South American teacher, Winston Dossetti, developed this simple and accessible alternative. Students create a cryoscopic chamber using ethanol and ice. They collect freezing point data of ionic and molecular solutions at varying concentrations and compare their freezing point depression data with values from the CRC. Through this process, students learn that freezing point data is a colligative property — a property that depends on the concentration of particles in a solution but not the identity of the solute.
