In the United States, there are no requirements for labeling food to indicate if the product contains raw materials from genetically modified organisms (GMO). In this PCR based experiment students will become savvy consumers and skilled technicians when they identify the presence of GMO soybean in food. The lab activity includes materials for ten setups or 20 PCR reactions, DNA extraction reagants, PCR beads (Taq polymerase, dNTPs, buffer, MgCl2), and a teacher’s guide with complete instructions, background information, and study questions. Requires an electrophoresis chamber, power supply, 5–50μl variable volume micropipets, thermal cycler, UV transilluminator, and microcentrifuge available separately. Note: This activity includes perishable materials. Please specify delivery date. It is shipped ambient, and some components require -20°C freezer storage upon receipt.
