The Rift Zone Lab Activity |
|
A moving demonstration, this activity illustrates the mechanism of plate tectonics and sea floor spreading. Students will first investigate the magnetism of rocks and minerals as well as a bar magnet. Then, using a PASPORT magnetic field sensor to measure the simulated magnetism of the bands of rock on an ocean floor, they will predict the position of a mid-ocean ridge on a map. This activity can be completed in two 50-minute lab sessions. Includes materials for eight setups, teacher’s guide, and student copymasters. The lab requires one magnetic field sensor and one USB Link or Xplorer Datalogger interface per setup, all available separately.
