Through the power of computer processing and enhancement, two existing images of the lower 48 states have been brought together in a single digital tapestry. The resulting composite provides a map of the U.S. land surface and shows the ages of its underlying rock formations. The union of topographic texture with the patterns defined by units of geologic time creates a unique digital tapestry of U.S. geological history and events that have shaped the region over the last 2.6 billion years.
