Ice-nucleating protein, found on the cell wall of the bacteria Pseudomonas syringae, actually causes water to start freezing at higher temperatures. The two-part activity allows students to perform various exercises with the protein, including demonstrating ice formation and studying potential commercial applications such as using the protein to prevent frost damage to crops and making snow for ski slopes. The first activity requires 30 minutes; the second part, 60 minutes. It comes with enough materials for six lab groups, as well as a teacher’s guide and student copymaster. An incubator, optional, is available separately. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
