Part 6A — Transformation of E. coli: Ampicillin Resistance Lab Activity |
| Fast and Easy Process Ensures Accurate Results |
Transformation, a basic principle of genetic engineering used to study the uptake and expression of foreign DNA by a recipient, results in the conferment of a particular trait or traits to a recipient lacking those traits. With this lab activity, students investigate one mechanism of genetic exchange by inserting the plasmid pUC8, which carries the gene for antibiotic resistance to ampicillin, into competent wild-type E. coli cells. It is an effective, convenient lab that can be performed in 45 minutes without the use of a centrifuge. Note: Coupon included for perishable materials. Redeem by mail, fax, phone, or e-mail.
