Phylum Chordata, one of the most successful branches of the tree of life, got its start in ancient seas over 530 million years ago. The unique features of this group: a supporting rod (notochord), a hollow dorsal nerve chord and pharyngeal gills, are investigated in modern hemichordates, tunicates, lancelets, and hagfish to show the evolutionary affinities of the phylum. This program shows how key adaptations led to the diversification and proliferation of the modern vertebrate groups, from fish to mammals. Duration: 15 minutes.
